Celebrating Form and Function With Hans J Wegner Furniture

Danish furniture designer Hans J Wegner, well-respected and admired for his exceptional designs and craftsmanship, discovered his love for wood at an early age. He developed his skills with wood-crafting while working as a young apprentice for master cabinet maker H.F. Stahlberg. He found the chance to experiment with wood designs at the workshop. As a young man, he pursued his passion with a degree in the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and later on at the Architectural Academy in Copenhagen. It was with these academic backgrounds and exposure to both fields that he developed an astute eye for wood design. He is perhaps best known for his work with chairs, one of his first creations being the “”Peacock Chair””. His design philosophy centered on purity of form and simplicity. In chairs for instance, this was akin to peeling off upholstery and bringing out the basic form and construction. This design approach produced wood creations that have a sleek, ultra-modern look, celebrating both form and function.
